The Port of New Orleans may soon be hit by a strike that could disrupt the nation's supply chain.

More than 40,000 members of the International Longshoremen's Association are set to stop work next week after negotiations deadlocked between the union and an alliance of port associations and companies.

The union is demanding higher pay and opposing automation.

About 700 longshoremen in New Orleans would be involved in the strike, which would shut down three dozen ports handling about half the nation's cargo.
