Ten hunters are gearing up for Louisiana's black bear hunting season after winning permits in the state's hunting lottery.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries issued the permits for the hunt, which will take place from December 7-22 in Bear Management Area 4.

The lottery attracted over 800 individual applicants, with preference points awarded to those not selected. The funds generated from the lottery will support black bear conservation efforts.

This is the first time black bear hunting has been allowed since the species was removed from the Endangered Species list in 2016.
