The New Orleans Police Department is reporting a steep decline in crime in the city this year.

Speaking Tuesday at the New Orleans Police and Justice Foundation luncheon, Chief Deputy Supt. Hans Ganthier said violent crime is down 24 percent from last year, and property crimes are down 27 percent.

Ganthier says proactive policing and targeting repeat offenders have helped make the difference.

A Louisiana State Police spokesman says February's deployment of state troopers in the city has helped NOPD bring crime down.
