The New Orleans City Council will debate an ordinance today that would ban all Mylar balloon releases in the city limits.
Council President Helena Moreno says Mylar balloons could land on power lines and damage the power grid.
A recent balloon release briefly knocked out power in Marrero after balloons hit power lines. Another in August shorted out the power near the Sewerage and Water Board Plant, leading to two days of boil-water advisories in the area.
The ordinance wouldn't apply to non-Mylar balloons.
