Construction is nearly complete on a new electrical substation at the New Orleans Sewerage and Water Board's main plant.

The substation is expected to start supplying power to the utility's pumps in time for the height of hurricane season.

Some of the utility's turbines are more than 100 years old and have become unreliable, prone to breaking down when streets are flooding.

The new substation will generate power starting this summer, but it won't be fully automated until late this year.
