City health officials are taking action after the West Nile virus was detected in mosquitoes on the east bank of Orleans Parish.

Evidence indicates that the virus is circulating between mosquitoes and birds. Infected mosquitoes can transmit it to rodents, other animals, and humans.

The New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board says a large-scale spraying operation for mosquito abatement was carried out on Wednesday night.
