Quiet For Now, But Hurricane Season Far From Over

September 10th marks the climatological peak of the Atlantic hurricane season, but this year, the tropics are unusually quiet.

Despite forecasts calling for up to ten hurricanes, only six named storms have formed so far, with just one reaching hurricane strength.

Forecasters say dry air, Saharan dust, and strong wind shear are suppressing development, with no tropical cyclones expected over the next week.

Still, with about two-and-a-half months left in the season, experts caution that conditions could shift quickly, especially in the warm waters of the Gulf, western Caribbean and parts of the Atlantic.

Last season there were 12 named storms that developed after September 10th, and it ended with Sara in mid-November.
