House Speaker Mike Johnson is defending comments made by President Trump about sending troops into U.S. cities.

During a meeting with high-ranking military generals President Trump said the nation is fighting a "war from within," as troops have been deployed to combat violence and crime in American cities.

The president's remarks have prompted pushback from Democratic leadership who assert that the military should be used to keep the public safe from external threats.

Speaker Johnson challenged the assertion by suggesting Trump's comments were "cherry-picked out of a long speech," and he noted that the president's actions show his ability to "take crime seriously."
