Former Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards will not run for U.S. Senate.
He made the announcement on Monday following months of speculation.
The New York Times reported previously that Edwards met with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer about the potential run for the Senate.
In a statement, Edwards says he hopes the people of Louisiana will quote "reject the extremist politicians that have paralyzed progress in this nation" and that he will do all he can "as a private citizen to advance that cause".
