Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser says he opposes Louisiana's move to closed primaries.

The state's open-primary system will be replaced by closed-party primaries for some key state races starting next year.

In the open primary system, candidates of all parties appear on the same ballot. In closed primaries, Democrats and Republicans vote in their party's primary elections.

Nungesser said on Tuesday that open primaries have helped Louisiana avoid the worst of the partisan divide affecting much of the nation.
