Some 250 Properties "Severely Damaged" By Tornado

Mayor Mitch Landrieu reports that approximately 250 buildings were "severely damaged" by the tornado that hit New Orleans East on Tuesday.

No one was killed but at least 31 persons were injured.  6 of those hurt suffered moderate to severe injuries.

In the aftermath of the tornado, officials say "a highly visible" multi-agency unified patrol was launched in storm-damaged areas.  In addition to NOPD officers and state troopers, 150 troops from the Louisiana National Guard are involved in the 24 hour patrols.

The City has opened a temporary shelter at Joe W. Brown Recreation Center at 5601 Read Blvd. for impacted residents. Resources for pets are also provided but they will not be guaranteed shelter within the facility.

Food, water, cots and blankets were made available to those who utilized the shelter overnight.

The Red Cross in partnership with other service providers is on site at Joe Brown Park to take initial assessments for short term and long term housing needs.
