Special Legislative Session Begins Tonight

A special session of the state legislature begins tonight with a 7 p.m. address from Governor John Bel Edwards.

Edwards will outline his plan to deal with a $304 million shortfall in revenue and may face opposition to his proposal to tap $119 million from the state's "rainy day" fund.

The Governor has said that if reserve funds aren't used to close the shortfall, spending cuts may be needed for higher education and K-12 schools.

Use of those funds requires approval from two-thirds of the legislature.

The session is scheduled to end on February 22,
