The 39 persons who were still being housed at a temporary emergency shelter at Joe Brown Park in New Orleans East on Tuesday are being moved into interim housing and the shelter will close at 10 a.m. today.
The Mayor says over 170 people had been housed at the park since a devastating EF-3 tornado ravaged neighborhoods in eastern New Orleans last Tuesday causing significant damage to some 700 properties.
The city has set a 30-day timeline to clear all debris from the impacted area. This is being completed in three curbside passes by city contractors and local, national, non-profit and faith-based organization volunteers.
The Regional Transit Authority (RTA) is restoring service to New Orleans East as road conditions and hazards are cleared. Chef Menteur Highway is expected to reopen for transit up to Read Boulevard beginning on Saturday and will reopen completely next Tuesday, Feb. 21.
