Retailer hhgregg Closing Local Stores

Retailer hhgregg is closing 88 underperforming stores across the country and three are located in south Louisiana.

The company will close its stores in Kenner, Harvey and at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge by mid-April.

The Indianapolis-based retail chain which sells appliances, electronics and furniture, opened its stores in Louisiana in the fall of 2012.

"We have determined that the economics of the affected locations will not allow us to achieve our overall goal of becoming a profitable company again," CEO Robert Riesbeck said in a statement. "After scrutinizing our real estate portfolio, we have identified a number of underperforming stores, as well as store locations that are no longer strong shopping destinations due to changes in the local retail shopping landscape."

The shuttering of 88 of 220 of its stores will affect 1,500 employees.
