Man Injured In Officer-Involved Shooting in Marrero

A 27-year-old Marrero man was shot Sunday evening by a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's deputy during a struggle that followed a reported domestic threat.

Deshawn Hovis was shot in the cheek but authorities say his injury did not appear to be life-threatening.

The incident occurred around 6:45 p.m. outside his mother's home in the 4100 block of Teton Street in Marrero.

Officers had responded to a report that Hovis had threatened his ex-girlfriend with violence.

Deputy Justine Campora had tried to stop Hovis from leaving his mother's home when he allegedly refused to obey an order to step out of his vehicle and a struggle ensued.  As Hovis put the vehicle into reverse, the deputy partially fell under it and she fired a single round striking him in the cheek.

The Sheriff's Office says Hovis will face a charge of attempted first-degree murder.
