Cardell Hayes to be sentenced in April for Will Smith's death

Cardell Hayes the man convicted of killing former Saints player Will Smith last April has appeared in Orleans Parish Criminal Court this morning , a judge set a sentencing date of Wednesday, April 19.

His sentencing has been pushed back before, most recently after one of his attorneys withdrew from the case.

Hayes was convicted in December of manslaughter for the shooting death of Will Smith and attempted manslaughter for the shooting of Smith's wife, Racquel.

The shootings happened last April after an altercation in the Lower Garden District.

He faces 20 to 40 years behind bars for the manslaughter charge and up to 20 for the attempted manslaughter charge.

Judge Camille Buras told defense attorneys she's ready for the case to proceed, clearly frustrated with so many delays.

She said sentencing will begin at 9 a.m. on that April date, with or without all the defense team present.
