Insanity May Be Defense In JPSO Deputy's Death

The lawyer for a man accused in the fatal shooting last June of a Jefferson Parish Sheriff's deputy may use insanity as a defense in the case.

The New Orleans Advocate reports that attorney Martin Regan has filed a motion to allow Jerman Neveaux to plead not guilty by reason of insanity.

Regan claims Neveaux is "severely affected" by lead poisoning and he tells the newspaper that the circumstances surrounding his reported poisoning will come out in court.

Neveaux is accused of shooting Deputy David Michel, Jr. three times after Michel stopped him for questioning in Harvey last June 22.

The Jefferson Parish District Attorney has said he plans to seek the death penalty in the case.
