N.O. Firefighters Involved In Monument Removal

A "handful" of New Orleans firefighters were involved in the removal early Monday morning of the "Battle of Liberty Place" monument at the foot of Iberville Street, but it's unclear what role they played.

The disclosure was made Wednesday by the President of the firefighters union, Nick Felton, who said that using firefighters to take down monuments is potentially dangerous.

"I'm concerned about the safety of firefighters. We are here to put out fires, provide medical assistance. That's what we do. Riot gear is not what we do," said Felton.

A spokesman for the city confirmed that firefighters were involved but did not say exactly how they assisted.

Tyrone Walker released the following statement to FOX 8.

"The emergency response agencies and essential city personnel, who are always engaged in the logistics and planning of major emergencies and events, were involved in the process to ensure a safe removal of the Battle of Liberty Place statue. The city's public safety agencies took part in this lawful operation, and we commend them for safely executing the plan while protecting the lives of all involved."
