Suspect Charged In Terrytown Murder

A 31-year-old man who was been living in the U.S. illegally has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of a woman whose body was found Monday in her apartment on Empire Place in Terrytown.

Irwin Gomez, a native of Honduras, was a neighbor of the victim, 33-year-old Nancy Gonzalez.

The body of Gonzalez was found in a pool of blood late Monday morning after another neighbor called the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office.  It is believed she was killed on Saturday.  Her 4-year-old son, Jeremy, was found unharmed inside the apartment.

Sheriff Newell Normand says Gonzalez, a native of the Dominican Republic, had been sexually assaulted and stabbed over 20 times.

Normand says Gomez was arrested by the NOPD about 2 years ago on charges of rape, kidnapping and domestic abuse battery, but the charges were later dropped.
