New False Alarm Law Takes Effect In N.O.

A new law imposing penalties for false alarms in New Orleans takes effect today.

Property owners will get a "warning" for a first false alarm and fines thereafter.  A $75 fine will be levied for the second false alarm and fines of $150 will be imposed for third and fourth offenses.

The NOPD says it will stop responding following a fourth false alarm.

The department says 98% of the alarms it responded to in 2016 were false, some 40,000.

Fines will not be imposed if property owners notify police before they arrive and the new law will not apply to fire alarms.
