LSU is used to complaints about its live tiger mascot, but a new complaint is focused on the Tigers' ties to racism.
A petition on Change.org is asking school officials to change the nickname Tigers because it refers to a Confederate Army regiment called the Louisiana Tigers. The petition claims it's incredibly insulting for a black student to attend a school that honors Confederate militarism.
LSUsports.net quotes the school's first football coach as saying the Confederate unit was, indeed, the inspiration for the Tigers nickname because of the soldiers' reputation for hard fighting.
