Turtles Released On Rebuilt Barrier Island Near Grand Isle

The state office of wildlife and fisheries says over 20 turtles have been released on a rebuilt barrier island.

The diamondback terrapin species uses the region for nesting. The 21 turtles were returned this week after being protected while the Chenier Ronquille barrier island near Grand Isle could be rebuilt.

The island restoration project is part of a broader effort to fortify barrier islands with funds from the BP Deepwater Horizon spill in 2010.
