The Orleans Parish Sheriff's Office has hired a public defender client advocate.

Virginia Ryan will be identifying inmates who could be safely released. She will also work to find alternative placement locations for inmates when the Orleans Parish jail population has reached capacity.

The move is an effort to cut the New Orleans jail population by 21-percent by mid-2019.
