FOX 8: Fire At S&WB Facility Turbine Room

(FOX 8/WVUE) Three New Orleans Fire Department vehicles were called to the Sewerage and Water Board facility on South Claiborne Avenue late Wednesday morning to put out a fire in a turbine room, according to a spokesperson for the New Orleans Fire Department.

Paul Rainwater, a member of the interim emergency management team, said crews were working to bring turbine Number 4 when a circuit board flared up, which then caught fire.

Rainwater said the fire was put out quickly and no one was injured.

There was no interruption or change to pumping capacity or other city services, Rainwater said.

Turbine Number 4 has been out of operation since 2012 and officials were trying to bring it back online.

Firefighters are working a fire in a turbine room at the facility at 8800 South Claiborne Avenue.

Smoke could be smelled in the air at the facility, according to our partners at NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune.
