Officials with Children's Hospital in New Orleans are confirming that upwards of a dozen children developed a rare surgical site infection after cardiac procedures performed between May and July.
The severe infection is being blamed on an environmental contaminant that is commonly found in water, soil and dust. It is believed to have come from a piece of equipment used to regulate the temperature of patients while they are on bypass.
The equipment has been replaced.
