The St. Tammany Parish coroner is ruling the death of a fire chief's wife a homicide.

The ruling comes nearly two months after Nanette Krentel was found dead in the rubble of her burned home and after three autopsies. Authorities say the woman had a gunshot wound and died before the fire consumed her body.

FOX 8 reports that St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Randy Smith is disputing the findings:

“At this time, the Sheriff’s Office investigation does not necessarily support the Coroner’s conclusion in this case. Sheriff Randy Smith will provide an update on the current status of the investigation at tomorrow’s press conference.“

Nanette Krentel is survived by her husband, Chief Steve Krentel of St. Tammany Parish District Number 12. The case remains under investigation.
