There's forward movement in a multi-million-dollar effort to make the 24-mile long Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Bridge a safer span for drivers.
The Causeway Commission has chosen the Volkert firm for its design to improve safety that will include 12 pullout bays where vehicles having problems or those that have wrecked can seek safety from the other driving lanes.
The cost of the bays is estimated at $60 million, with work expected to get underway on the northbound bridge early next year.
