New Orleans District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro and nearly a dozen subordinates are the targets of a federal lawsuit filed yesterday.
The ACLU and others brought the legal action after the DA's office allegedly issued what have been described as "fake subpoenas" to compel witnesses to testify, and then arresting those who wouldn't cooperate.
ACLU Executive Director Marjorie Esman says subpoenas were issued and people incarcerated who had "done nothing wrong."
"I am confident that not only my office, but also the Assistant District Attorneys who have sacrificed so much for their community will be completely vindicated," said Cannizzaro in a statement.
