The man who used to be the chief spokesman for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office is officially entering the race to be the department's next sheriff.
Retired Colonel John Fortunato made his formal announcement Thursday night in Metairie. A UNO poll released Wednesday shows 44 percent of those surveyed would vote for Fortunato, while only 19 percent favored Interim Sheriff Joseph Lopinto.
Both men will be seeking to complete retired Sheriff Newell Normand's term that ends on June 30, 2020.
