The Louisiana Legislative Auditor's Office is out with a new report, this one critical of the state's payments to nursing homes.

The report, released yesterday, found that while payments are rising, the occupancy rate of nursing homes in the state remains flat, while the quality of care is ranked near the bottom.

The state paid out about $1 billion in Medicaid funds to around 250 private nursing facilities over the past year. The auditor's report concludes Louisiana could save $80 million a year if state lawmakers adjusted the payments to match those of peer states.
