A woman walking along Behrman Hwy. near Nova St. was killed while she was trying to cross the roadway, state police said.
The crash happened around 10 p.m. on Tuesday, claiming the life of 37-year-old Sonia Ruiz-Martinez of Terrytown.
A preliminary investigation revealed that Martinez was attempting to cross Behrman Hwy. from east to west. While Martinez was crossing the northbound left lane, she was struck by a 2008 Mazda 6, driven by 58-year-old Tara Hahnebohm of New Orleans. Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene.
Speed and impairment are not believed to be factors on the part of Hahnebohm, who provided a breath sample and no detectable alcohol was found. Toxicology tests will be performed on Martinez following an autopsy. The crash remains under investigation.
