Governor Awaits Progress On Budget Shortfall

An expected $1 billion shortfall for the fiscal year budget that takes effect July 1st continues to weigh heavily on the mind of Governor John Bel Edwards.

He addressed the Press Club of Baton Rouge yesterday, saying he's still ready to call a special legislative session if lawmakers can get together on a plan to address the massive amount of red ink. Edwards had set a January 19th deadline for that to happen but is now ready to wait a little longer.

But he says he's opposed to renewing the fifth cent of the now five-percent state sales tax as a way to avoid the fiscal budget cliff Louisiana is facing.
