The head of the government watchdog group Council for a Better Louisiana says he's cautiously optimistic that state lawmakers will come up with a solution for the state's budget mess.
The legislature begins meeting Monday in special session with the goal of resolving a $1 billion shortfall expected when temporary tax measures expire at the end of June.
Council CEO Barry Erwin told the Press Club of Baton Rouge yesterday that the best lawmakers may be able to do is to address the massive amount of red ink in a "short-term way."
