A portion of the 350-bay Bonnet Carre Spillway in St. Charles Parish were opened Thursday to offset the potential for flooding in downriver areas of the Mississippi River, including New Orleans.
The river has been on the rise as the result of melting snow in the Midwest and heavy rains.
Ten bay doors are expected to be opened initially, funneling off water from the river into Lake Pontchartrain.
