Later this week, the Shell Convent Refinery will be hosting a memorial service and marker dedication for upwards of one-thousand enslaved people.
The Advocate reports they were buried in unmarked graves discovered five years ago at the Bruslie and Monroe plantations northwest of the plant.
The ceremony, with Shell getting assistance from the River Road African American Museum, will be held on Saturday, giving descendants an opportunity to pay their respects.
