The Louisiana Department of Revenue says a former federal prison inmate is facing charges stemming from the filing of fraudulent state income tax returns.

Officials say John Michael McDonald filed fabricated W-2 withholding statements that claimed refunds totaling $171,000 between 2010 and 2017.

All of the alleged crimes took place while he was serving time in federal lockups, including the Oakdale Federal Correctional Institution in Louisiana.

He was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on Friday, the same day he was released from Oakdale.
