Republican Congressman Steve Scalise is downplaying rumors that he is vying to become the next Speaker of the House.
Politico reports that Scalise, the House Majority Whip, and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy are both angling for the job if House Speaker Paul Ryan announces his retirement following the 2018 election.
Scalise says neither he nor McCarthy are giving the idea much thought, and that both men are solely focused on keeping the House in Republican hands after midterm voting is over.
