A bill that would impose the strictest abortion ban in the nation is headed to the Louisiana House after clearing the Senate Tuesday.

The 31-3 vote moves the state closer to banning abortions after 15 weeks, instead of the current 20 weeks.  Similar legislation was signed into law in Mississippi earlier this year but is being challenged in federal court and not being enforced at this point.

The Advocate reports that all but about 5% of abortions performed in Louisiana currently take place prior to the 15th week of pregnancy.
