A suspect is behind bars, charged in the early Sunday morning shooting and wounding of a Jefferson Parish deputy.

Sheriff Joe Lopinto says the suspect opened fire after the deputy attempted to stop his car bearing a stolen license plate near a Manhattan Boulevard convenience store.

The officer was hospitalized with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg.
