A new operating budget approved by the state Senate calls for steep cuts across the government to protect health programs.

The budget was approved in a 27 to ten vote Tuesday, shielding nursing home residents from evictions and keeping safety net hospitals open. In order to balance things out, senators had to propose cuts to college financing and the elimination of the food stamp program.

Senators say they don't want this budget to go into effect and hope lawmakers pass replacement taxes in a special session next week.
