The short-term rental of whole houses in New Orleans will be coming to a screeching, temporary halt after city council action Thursday.

The New Orleans Advocate reports that could impact more than a thousand homes currently listed by Airbnb and HomeAway.

The panel voted in favor of a nine-month moratorium on the renewal or issuance of new licenses, even those currently awaiting approval, pending the adoption of new regulations.

Property owners say short-term rentals give them a source of income, while opponents argue they're driving up housing costs and the rate of evictions.
