January marks the end of Louisiana's food stamp program unless more money is added to the social services budget.
The Department of Children and Family Services is taking an approximate $34 million cut as part of the new budget passed by lawmakers.
According to the agency, this will cause the SNAP program, commonly referred to as food stamps, to shut down in 2019.
Currently 19% of Louisiana residents get assistance through the program, half of those being children.
