Recent testing shows water in one area of Terrebonne Parish contains a brain-eating amoeba.

Consolidated Waterworks District No. 1 tested for the amoeba over the weekend and had positive results for the Pointe-aux-Chenes area, but does not affect the area of Island Road.

The water district has switched disinfection procedures from chloramine to free chlorine, and has contacted the Louisiana Department of Health.

According to the CDC, this infection is rare and typically occurs when people go swimming in warm freshwater as the amoeba enters the body through the nose.

People cannot get infected by drinking contaminated water.
