Upstairs Lounge Fire Victims Remembered

French Quarter, downtown New Orleans

Many people remain shaken by what happened 45 years ago yesterday at the Upstairs Lounge, a French Quarter gay bar where an arson fire killed 32 people and injured 15 others.

It wasn't until the massacre at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando two years ago that there had been a deadlier U.S. attack on the gay community.

A memorial service took place Sunday at St. Mark's United Methodist Church that was followed by a second line to the location of the fire on Chartres Street.
