Internationally-known heart surgeon and medical educator Dr. John Ochsner died today at the age of 91.
He was the son of late Dr. Alton Ochsner, who started a private group practice now known as the Ochsner Health System. It's one of the largest independent academic health systems in the nation, and is the largest non-profit health system in Louisiana.
Dr. Ochsner graduated from Tulane University School of Medicine, and in 1970, he performed the first heart transplant in the state.
He had retired from surgery in 2004, but continued to see patients.
