Chris became the second hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic season Tuesday afternoon, with maximum winds of 85 miles per hour.
Some additional strengthening is possible through Wednesday before Chris is expected to weaken.
The good news is that Chris is moving away from the East Coast and will not directly impact the United States. However, swells generated by the storm could cause "life-threatening surf and rip current conditions" for the coasts of North Carolina and mid-Atlantic states over the next few days, says the National Hurricane Center.
Forecasters are also watching the remnants of Beryl for possible redevelopment after it curves into the western Atlantic, entering an area that's fueled Chris' growth over the last few days.
