The reasons to protect yourself against mosquito bites in the state are somewhat more urgent today after Louisiana health officials say the confirmed number of West Nile virus cases has increased to 13.
That's more than twice the number reported last week, with five of the new victims, one of them in St. Amant, contracting the most serious form of the mosquito-borne virus that attacks the body's central nervous system and can lead to death.
