Ice skating and the New Orleans metro area don't seem to be likely companions but don't tell that to the Esplanade Mall in Kenner.
That's where the first permanent ice rink to open in the area in years made its weekend debut.
Penguin Ice Skating will operate seven days a week utilizing synthetic ice. Private lessons are offered and the facility can be used to host birthday parties.
NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune notes a previous attempt at ice-skating in the metro area was also in Kenner with a rink in Chateau Village. The long-gone Lake Forest Plaza Shopping Center also gave shoppers a chance to lace up the skates.
