They've been a long time coming, but today begins the first round of safety improvements to the 24-mile long Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Bridge.
Work could wrap up by the spring of next year on the construction of a dozen emergency pull-over areas along the two spans, six on each side.
The upgrades also call for the installation of higher guard rails made of steel to better prevent vehicles from winding up in the lake during an accident.
