Gov. John Bel Edwards announced the future of the former Avondale Shipyard Thursday.
According to Edwards, the site will now be known as Avondale Marine by Huntington Ingalls. The shipyard site will become a multi-modal transportation site.
Jefferson Parish President Mike Yenni welcomed the new owners T.Parker Host and Hilco Global to the parish.
“This is a landmark day for the Parish of Jefferson. The struggle by this administration and this council to re-open this facility has been discussed everywhere from corridors of Congress to conference rooms in Jefferson.” said Yenni, “Since August 8, 2017 when Huntington Ingalls CFO Chris Kastner announced that they had found a buyer, I have waited for this day. This site, with its rich history of once employing 26,000 people and completing almost 2,500 vessels, warships, offshore ships and transports from icebreakers to container carriers, is about hum again. And the sound of commerce will be music to our ears.”
